Refracted Realities is an analog worldbuilding game for small groups of players, that addresses some issues found in similar games, like long waiting times between turns, large rulesets and a lack of collaboration.

Each round looks like a group discussion about some field-specific aspects of a world and/or the communities that live in it, sparked by Inspiration Cards. Inspiration Cards contain abstract, AI-generated images that serve as inspiration for the details of the players’ creation. Each round, each player will mainly focus on the field assigned them by the Field Card they draw, between:

Players jot down the contributions specific to their field, in whatever format they deem appropriate, be that notes, sketches, maps, timelines, or more and then repeat, drawing new Inspiration and Field Cards for the new round.

The game was initially developed as part of a thesis project for the MSc in Games at ITU, by a closely collaborating team of three: Eszter Várhidi, Fabio Scita, Lani Feldstedt.
